xxvii, 276 pages, 8 unnumbered pages of plates : illustrations, map ; 23 cm. Summary:"The Colonial and Overseas Civil Service grew with Britain's overseas and imperial expansion and could be identified with the great age of imperial power, producing a serene and confident image of imperial rule. But this was an empire of service rather than domination." "On Crown Service is the story of that Service and of the men and women from Britain - and, increasingly, from the former dependant territories - who ran it. It shows how the Service affected the lives of over 600 million people across the globe. Its work included administration and law, medical, nursing and veterinary services, scientific research, education, agriculture, engineering and transport, communication and irrigation."--Jacket.
