Preface
Since the end of World War II, globalization has driven unprecedented economic growth. Yet beneath this progress lies an uneven reality: it has become a pipeline through which global wealth is quietly redirected.
In developing countries, entrenched monopolies over resources and power have given rise to a dominant wealth-holding class. They—often disguised as respectable elites—extract wealth from their home countries and relocate it to developed countries, through complex mechanisms. I refer to this phenomenon as International Wealth Transfer.
This financial border-crossing crime is unprecedented, in both scale and impact. For the first time, the traditional wealth cycles within nations—cycles that have sustained each society since the dawn of civilization—have been systematically dismantled.
On that point, local monopolies in developing countries did not act alone. They operate in a deep entanglement with the financial systems, legal shelters, and political interests in developed countries. Driven by greed, corrupted elites across borders colluded to preserve their mutual advantage.
Over time, as resources flow to those who need them least, the wealth gap hardens into a new form of slavery. Endless inflation and illicit cross-border capital further compound the pressure, leaving the current civilization perched atop a silent, unseen powder keg.
Finally, the long-feared spark—unexpected, yet unsurprising—arrived: COVID-19.
The COVID-19 pandemic did not create this crisis; it exposed it. In its wake, developing countries, already hollowed out by years of extractive growth, collapsed into deep recession. Meanwhile, the exploitation continued relentlessly, with cheap labor overused, the environment further destroyed—stripping local communities of resources, dignity, and ultimately, any room to survive.
As a result, millions of people across developing countries, facing a collapsing future at home, decided to resist this modern pyramid of exploitation. Around 2021, they began risking their lives to cross borders, marching to developed countries—not in pursuit of wealth, but in search of basic security and peace.
Many of them, though, never made it to their destination. Some were injured, detained, disappeared along the way, or died.
Yet by the time they finally reached the other shore, few anticipated that all they found was another version of the very hell they had just left.
For us, migration was not a choice. It was the consequence of a system designed to extract, exclude, and discard.
This book does not attempt to explain migration through policy debates or abstract theory. It follows a path on the ground, shaped by risk, uncertainty, calculation, and endurance. It is a journey taken step by step, across borders both visible and invisible.
Welcome, my friend, welcome to this special book. Through its pages, I invite you on that journey—one that is deeply personal, yet also part of the broader story of human history.
And the answer, if there is one, waits on the road itself.
