THE CROSS AND THE LAST WORDS
Meditations with Fulton J. Sheen on Calvary and the Interior Life
"For I am determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified." (1 Corinthians 2:2)
Few themes captured the heart of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen like the Seven Last Words of Christ. For fifty-eight consecutive Good Fridays, he preached on these final utterances from Calvary, drawing countless souls to the mystery of the Cross.
In this moving third volume of The Sheen Mission Series, Allan Smith gathers Sheen's most profound reflections on the Passion of Christ. These pages reveal the Cross not as defeat but as victory, not as despair but as hope, and not as shame but as love poured out.
Inside you will discover:
- Twelve meditations on the Seven Last Words of Christ
- Fulton Sheen's insights on suffering, mercy, and hope in daily life
- Guidance on practicing virtue, overcoming vice, and living the Beatitudes
- Prayers and devotions to deepen your union with Christ Crucified
- Scripture passages and Sheen quotes for Holy Hour and Lenten reflection
Why this book matters
In an age that avoids sacrifice and downplays sin, the words of Christ from the Cross remain a healing medicine. Sheen shows us how these words can heal wounds, inspire courage, and lead us into the interior life with Christ.
Whether read during Lent, used for a Holy Hour, or prayed with year-round, The Cross and the Last Words will guide you to the foot of Calvary. There, the dying Christ still speaks-offering forgiveness, hope, and renewal.
"Unless there is a Good Friday in your life, there can be no Easter Sunday."
- Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen
"Calvary is the mountain where all the love of God is revealed. In the Seven Last Words, we hear the heart of Christ speaking to the heart of the world."
- Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen
Allan Smith is an author, Catholic radio host, and retreat leader dedicated to promoting the life and legacy of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen. He has edited and published numerous Sheen titles in multiple languages and continues to lead retreats and parish missions across North America.
