Inscribed by the author to R.L. Poole. Gardiner, Samuel Rawson. Cromwell's Place in History: Founded on Six Lectures Delivered in the University of Oxford. London, New York, Longmans, Green, and Co., 1897. 120, 32 pp. Publisher's original navy cloth, with spine label. Spine label chipping, boards bumped and worn, but good. Front hinge cracked but secure, front free endpaper lacking. Moderate toning to interior, a few (mostly partial) cracks to text block, all leaves secure. Presentation inscription "RL Poole/ From the Author" dated 1897 to head of half title. $250. * Originally delivered as the first James Ford Lectures in British History at the University of Oxford. Both Gardiner and the recipient of this copy, Reginald Lane Poole [1857-1939], were prominent Oxford-based historians. Poole would later go on to give his own set of Ford lectures, published as The Exchequer in the Twelfth Century (1911).
