Critical thinking is a skill you can practice and check, and this book shows you how. Learn to test arguments, weigh evidence, read statistics, catch your own mental shortcuts, and make choices you can defend.
Ten chapters build in order, each one using the tools from the last. Every method comes with a real case: the "1 in 73 million" figure that helped convict Sally Clark, the retracted 1998 MMR vaccine paper, and the engineers who warned about Challenger's O-rings the night before launch.
When British regulators reported in 1995 that some birth control pills doubled the risk of blood clots, from 1 in 7,000 to 2 in 7,000, researchers later estimated 13,000 extra abortions the following year.
Each case shows the question someone needed to ask, and the matching chapter teaches you to ask it.
The chapters work through:
- Socratic questioning, System 1 and System 2, and the Paul-Elder intellectual standards, along with the habits of humility, curiosity, and fair-mindedness
- How to break an argument into premises and a conclusion, find the assumptions people leave unsaid, and restate an opposing view in its strongest form before you answer it
- Validity, soundness, syllogisms, modus ponens, and modus tollens
- Inference to the best explanation and how to test an argument from analogy
- Informal fallacies, including ad hominem, false dilemma, slippery slope, and straw man, plus the "fallacy fallacy" of crying foul on arguments that hold up in context
- Lateral reading, the SIFT fact-checking method, the hierarchy of research quality, and why peer review and replication still leave gaps
- Relative versus absolute risk, confounding variables, small or skewed samples, and graphs drawn to mislead
- Confirmation bias, anchoring, hindsight, and groupthink, with the few debiasing methods that have research behind them
- The gambler's fallacy, base rates, and Bayesian updating without heavy math, plus calibration checks that show whether your 70 percent hunches come true 70 percent of the time
- The Five Whys, expected value, decision matrices, premortems, and decision journals that let you judge a choice by its process instead of how it turned out
This book suits:
- College students in reasoning or informal logic courses
- Professionals who weigh data, risk, and competing proposals
- Adult readers who want to catch their own errors sooner
- Anyone facing a medical choice that rests on test results
You need no background in philosophy or psychology. School-level arithmetic is enough.
Every chapter ends with practice questions, and a full set of example responses shows one strong way to answer each. A 2,400-year historical timeline, a glossary, complete works cited, and recommended readings round out the book. In one study, gynecologists who learned to restate test results as simple counts went from 21 percent correct to 87 percent.
These methods can be taught, and this book gives you the practice to learn them.
