The object of this war was for the allies to capture the Russian Port of Sevastopol. It developed into a protracted war, marred by mishandling and gross incompetence. From it came the Charge of the Light Brigade, a complete waste of time, as the French general said, "It is magnificent, but it is not war", in French of course. The famous 'Thin Red Line'. The appalling conditions of the medical facilities at Scutari, which led Florence Nightingale to campaign for improved conditions for wounded soldiers. The incompetence was personified by the soldiers fighting in the winter in normal uniforms whilst crates of winter clothing sat on the docks. Conditions were appalling, made worse by a lack of common care for their soldiers.
This is an excellent read, treating the war dispassionately, therefore it is very informative for the student of Victorian Wars.
