The Cricket on the Hearth. FIRST EDITION,2nd issue. The third of Dickens Christmas books. The Christmas books, particularly The Chimes, the Cricket, and the Carol, were the centerpiece of Dickens' public reading tours in the 1850s and 60s. This story is about John and Dot Peerybingle, who are having marriage difficulties due to the great difference in their ages. John suspects Dot of having an affair, and consults the ever-chirping Cricket on the Hearth. The cricket reassures John that his fears are unfounded, and the story ends happily.
