Dracula, Frankenstein and eight more spooky classics – retold for ages 7–11 with all the thrills and none of the nightmares.
An opera house haunted by a musical spirit. A castle whose owner sleeps in a coffin. A village where a headless horseman rides at night. This ten-book collection transports young readers to the world's most famous gothic stories – Dracula, Frankenstein, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and more – each carefully adapted and sanitised for a younger audience, keeping every thrill of the originals whilst staying genuinely age-appropriate. Every book includes a QR code linking to a free audiobook, so children can listen along as they read.
The adaptations are by Gemma Barder, a Leicestershire-based children's author who began her career in children's magazines and has adapted classics across Sweet Cherry's Easy Classics range. The collection is illustrated throughout by Nick Moffatt, a freelance illustrator of twenty years across film, television, advertising and animation, whose recent cover designs were highly commended in the World Illustration Awards.
Spooky stories do something special: they turn reluctant readers into children who can't put a book down. For schools, the set is a Halloween display staple and a year-round hook for KS2 guided reading and library collections. For parents and gift buyers, it's the box that owns October – and earns its shelf space every month after.
