What happened when millions of ordinary people around the world suddenly became traders?
The Covid Trader Generation tells the story of one of the most dramatic changes in modern financial history: the explosion of retail investing during and after the pandemic.
From Wall Street and GameStop to Dalal Street, crypto, options trading, mutual funds, SIPs and the rise of Indian retail investors, this book explores how lockdowns, zero-cost trading apps, social media, stimulus money, influencers and powerful new technology transformed the way people invest, speculate and think about wealth.
With India at the centre of the emerging-market story, the book examines the extraordinary growth of demat accounts, derivatives trading, digital brokerages and financial participation—alongside the uncomfortable reality that many individual traders consistently lose money.
It also investigates some of the defining controversies of the new trading era: meme stocks, Robinhood, FTX and crypto collapses, finfluencers, market manipulation allegations, derivatives speculation, regulatory crackdowns, trading communities on Twitter/X and the growing power of algorithms.
But this is not only a story about speculation.
It is also about a lasting global shift in savings, investing and financial culture.
Covering equities, options and futures, mutual funds, ETFs, bonds, gold, real estate and cryptocurrencies, the book explains how different asset classes performed through the extraordinary market cycle that began in 2020—and what investors can learn from it.
The final chapters look forward to the next transformation: artificial intelligence, automated trading, AI-generated research, deepfakes, personalised financial tools and a future in which humans increasingly compete—and collaborate—with machines.
Blending market history, statistics, behavioural finance, technology and real-world controversies, The Covid Trader Generation is for anyone who wants to understand how the pandemic created a new generation of investors—and how that generation may reshape global markets for decades to come.
A global story. An Indian lens. A new era of investing.
