COVER PHOTOS BY NIC DUNLOP - Zippo lighters for sale as souvenirs in Vietnam. Thai Thi Tinh who lost most Of her family to the wars in Vietnam. keywords: Magazine Politics. DESCRIPTION - CONTENTS: SANCTIONS AGAINST IRAQ: NEW WEAPON OF MASS DESTRUCTION by Roger Normand - More Iraqis have died from US- imposed sanctions than from the two atomic bombs dropped on Japan. The extent of suffering and punishment imposed on the people to go after their leader violates international law and tramples human rights; NEAR WAR, REAL FEAR by Paul Rogers - This year, the US dragged the world to the brink of war with Iraq. Fear that the regime retained its chemical and biological weapons arsenal drove a policy bent on ensuing America’s place as the only superpower; THE TECHNOLOGY OF POLITICAL CONTROL by Robin Ballantyne - Governments and corporations are developing less-than-lethal weapons and oxymoronic concepts like non-lethal warfare. Around the globe, police, armies and prison authorities are using this technology to repress political dissent; DEATH AND SILENCE IN USELESS ALGERIA by Farhan Haq - Western media accounts of massacres of Algerian civilians routinely blame Islamic fundamentalists. But the Algerian government, which maybe complicit in the murders, has refused to allow independent international inspections; JIHAD INTERNATIONAL, INC. by Eqbal Ahmad .29 The current wave of internationalized jihad that is sweeping the world is not an inherent tenet of Islam. Rather, it is a by-product of the cynical Cold War manipulations of Muslim countries by the US and other Western powers; AUTUMN OF THE AUTOCRAT by Saul Landau and Sarah Anderson; PUNISHING PINOCHET by Peter Weiss – Since seizing power in a bloody 1973 CIA-backed coup, Gen. Augusto Pinochet has escaped justice for the tortures and killings by his regime. Now, a legal challenge from Spain may finally comer the Chilean dictator; THE DRUG WARS FUNGAL SOLUTION by Jim Hogshire - Frankenstein joins the drug war as the US Department of Agriculture arrogantly tinkers with a strain of the fusarium fungus. The researchers are hoping to engineer a fungus that will destroy the world’s coca and opium poppy crops — and then obediently die; THE BURMA-SINGAPORE AXIS: GLOBALIZING THE HEROIN TRADE by Leslie Kean and Dennis Bernstein - The Burmese junta, long involved in opium growing and trafficking, has made an unlikely squeaky-clean, anti-drug friend. Singapore’s liberal banking laws and massive investments in Burma are the conduit through which narco-dollars flow into the world economy; VIETNAM: THE FINAL BATTLE by John Pilger - After defeating France and then the US, Vietnam is facing another onslaught — by the forces of international finance and capital. This time, the values that millions of Vietnamese died for and the very soul of the nation are at stake. inventory #48511.…
