Milton and Otto K. Wohlers, the book grew out of graded problems the authors set for high school manual-training pupils and is arranged so that each exercise builds on the one before. It is divided into two parts, spindle turning and face-plate (chuck) turning, and covers the care and setup of the lathe, the grinding and use of turning tools, and a graduated series of cuts and projects, from chisel handles, mallets, and rolling pins to towel rings, nut bowls, picture frames, smoking stands, electric reading lamps, and spiral-turned magazine holders. The projects are presented as exact measured drawings dimensioned for use at the bench, making this a standard early-twentieth-century American text for teaching wood turning in schools.
