Military treatise on the theory and science of war for the instruction of army cadets at West Point at the end of the 19th-century. Contents include strategy, plan of campaign, composition of the army, marches, battles, attack of positions, defensive operations, advanced guards, ambuscades, "reconnoissances," foraging, camps, modern warfare, etc. Moderately edgeworn and soiled red blind-stamped cloth with gilt spine title and black topstain. Heavier wear to faded spine with substantial chipping at head of spine and adjoining portion of rear board. Binding firm. Earlier library plate from Wm. B. Stevens Memorial Library in Manayunk, Philadelphia inside front board with discard stamp. Library stamps on title page and last page of text. Contents clean and very good.
