Print on Demand. This book provides a window into the efforts of the United States Food Administration to engage civilians in supporting the war effort by conserving food. The author takes the position that ordinary Americans can have an active role in helping to secure democracy by reducing their personal consumption of wheat, meat, fats, sugar, and milk. By providing recipes and other practical suggestions for how to substitute more plentiful foods for these scarce resources, the author demonstrates that such acts of self-sacrifice and public service are as patriotic as the heroic deeds of soldiers on the front lines. This book stands as a valuable resource for understanding the mobilization of everyday Americans to engage in the war effort and the depth of sacrifice made by all sectors of society during the First World War. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…
