This book deals with the fundamental aspects of electrochemical corrosion of titanium body implants and associated mitigation strategies. It explains the corrosion of titanium implants and the current coating technologies for preventing corrosion in
a body fluid‑type environment. Insights are also provided about the titanium clinical failures and various regulatory statutory mandates governing the use of biomaterials. It explains the development of new titanium alloys, their properties applicable for
body implant applications, and new additive manufacturing methods.
Key features:
• Focusses on a comprehensive idea about corrosion and coatings involving titanium implants exclusively.
• Explains regulatory frameworks governing the utilization of biomaterials.
• Provides a general idea about corrosion fundamentals, estimation, and protection.
• Includes numerous case studies related to clinical failures of titanium implants and coatings.
• Talks about recent concepts and developments in titanium metallurgy, like stress shielding, recent alloy development strategies, and so forth.
This book is intended for researchers in materials science and biomedical sciences, as well as professionals involved in titanium implant manufacturing.
R. Narayanan has completed Ph.D. in the field of Anodic oxidation and cathodic HA deposition on Ti-6Al-4V for biomaterial applications from the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, IIT Madras, during 2006.
