Print on Demand. This book brings together a diverse collection of poems from medieval through early modern England. The verses trace the evolution of the English language, from its Anglo-Saxon beginnings to the rich complexity of the Elizabethan era. The author displays a keen understanding of the historical and literary context of each poem, offering illuminating commentary alongside the verse. Themes of love, death, religion, and the human experience emerge, explored with depth and sensitivity. These are works that capture the essence of English literature, offering a fascinating glimpse into the beliefs, values, and aspirations of a bygone age. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.

The poems printed here are mainly chosen from those which have descended so plentifully upon us, yet threaten through neglect to disappear altogether. To recite, to extol, to contend for them is but the payment of a debt and it is in this spirit that the collection has been made. The texts are taken from the earliest editions avail able, but it has not been possible in all cases to preserve the original spelling.
