Print on Demand. This book examines how vast quantities of corn are cultivated, transported, and distributed in the United States. It reveals the vast scale of corn markets, the concentration of corn production, and the dominance of two major port areas for corn exports. The author's careful analysis of data from surveys and interviews with grain industry personnel paints a detailed picture of origin and destination patterns and the modes of transportation used. The book also includes a review of previous estimates of corn flows and associated transportation modes. The author demonstrates the accuracy of the data by comparing it with data from the US Army Corps of Engineers and the US Department of Transportation. In a time of increasing concerns about food security and supply chain resilience, this book provides important insights into the efficiency of the US corn marketing system. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

Corn is widely used as an animal feed and, to a lesser extent, for human consumption, for industrial products such as starch and alcohol, and for seed (table The proportion of total production used for livestock feed has declined from 86 percent in 1970 - 71 to 56 percent in 1979 - 80. This decline has been offset by a 364 percent increase in exports and a 55 percent (218-million-bushel) increase in food and industrial use. One effect of these changes, especially the increase in exports, has been an ih creased demand for transportation and marketing services. These changes in demand influence the destination and mode of transportation selected by the shippers.
