To most people, mention of a coral reef conjures up images of sunlit, turquoise water. However, the reef at night is a totally different world: against a background of deepest black, coral animals emerge and transform their rocky limestone homes into brilliant, multicolored gardens. Fish and other creatures join them, displaying markedly different forms and behaviours from those seen in daylight. This book takes the reader on a journey through the hours between dusk and dawn, explaining how darkness transforms the reef into a mysterious, unusually beautiful realm where bioluminescence is the only natural form of light. The book details the curious behaviours and extraordinary creatures that illuminate this shadowy world. The text introduces basic biological concepts in an easy-to-read, anecdotal fashion and includes a special how-to section on night diving as well as a short essay on underwater photography at night.
