Coordinate measuring machines are among the most capable — and the most frequently misapplied — instruments in modern manufacturing. Practitioners who inherit a CMM with minimal formal training face a persistent gap: able to operate the equipment but unable to confidently qualify a probe, construct an uncertainty budget, align a complex workpiece, or defend a measurement result when challenged by an auditor or a customer. Without a structured, unified foundation, confident-looking output can carry significant unquantified risk. The field has no shortage of standards documents, equipment manuals, and specialist papers — but no single resource that holds the full discipline together.
This handbook brings these subjects together in a single structured reference. It delivers a comprehensive, step-by-step path through the complete discipline of dimensional inspection — combining clear theoretical foundations with detailed, worked instruction across every core area of coordinate measurement, in fifteen structured chapters with worked examples and practice problems throughout.
In this book, you will learn how to:
● Calculate, validate, and report expanded measurement uncertainty with full metrological traceability, using structured uncertainty budget methods and worked propagation examples that connect directly to real inspection scenarios
● Qualify probes and stylus configurations correctly for every part geometry and access requirement, and understand the mechanical basis of probe qualification error and how it enters the measurement result
● Align parts using 3-2-1 datum schemes and CAD-based best-fit methods, and understand how alignment errors propagate into reported feature measurements
● Interpret and verify all major geometric tolerances — position, flatness, perpendicularity, cylindricity, profile, and runout — directly from CMM output, with worked examples referenced to current international standards
● Develop structured CMM part programmes with efficient probe paths, subroutine logic, and offline programming workflows using the industry-standard DMIS programming protocol
● Apply scanning techniques and sensor fusion strategies for high-density surface measurement, complex geometry inspection, and multi-sensor integration
● Integrate CMM measurement data into statistical process control systems, automated quality management workflows, and digitally connected manufacturing environments
This handbook is written for quality engineers, metrologists, manufacturing engineers, process engineers, inspection technicians, calibration specialists, and engineering students requiring a thorough, practical, and professionally structured reference for coordinate measurement. It also serves technical instructors and researchers working in dimensional metrology and manufacturing quality.
From equipment selection to measurement reporting, this handbook provides the complete, structured foundation that serious practitioners of coordinate measurement require. Open the book and begin building the knowledge that every stage of the inspection process demands.

Store description
We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first visit or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book. We are a company who put our customers at the centre of everything we do as we understand the importance of reading because once you learn to read, you will forever be free. There are a whole lot of things in this world of ours that we are yet to explore, which is why we will forever inspire curious minds.…
