The first step-by-step UNIX professional's guide to setting up an Internet information server.
Finally, there's a book specifically designed to help UNIX professionals deliver information across the Internet. A Cookbook for Serving the Internet, UNIX Version is the first book to bring together all the resources and information you'll need to set up an Internet information server with the UNIX system of your choice. Even better, its "cookbook" format makes it remarkably easy to find the information you need -- and get online fast.
Learn how to make the critical up-front decisions that will determine your information server's structure -- and its ultimate success. Then, walk through every step of getting your Internet server up and running:
- Planning your infrastructure
- Finding the Internet software tools you'll need
- Deciding what information to provide
- Choosing the best tools -- and then maintaining and supporting the pages you create with them
- Implementing the latest Internet information services, including the World Wide Web, Harvest, Archie, enhanced ftp and listservers
Whether you're a UNIX user or system administrator, this book presents Internet information servers in a language you'll understand -- focusing on the tools and technologies available to you. You'll learn how to accommodate information types like text and tar files, graphics, and TeX. You'll discover how to extend the capabilities of your Internet server with Perl, Java, JavaScript and other widely used UNIX system tools. And you'll walk through the fundamentals of monitoring and maintaining your UNIX-based Internet information server -- including essential preventive maintenance techniques.
Best of all, you'll stay up-to-date for years to come -- because this book is linked directly to a Web site that updates all the information and resources covered here.
It's simple: if you want to leverage the Internet's extraordinary power -- and you use UNIX -- A Cookbook for Serving the Internet is all you need.
