La Resolution et l'Adventure passent le cap de Bonne-Espérance, puis plongent dans un monde blanc où nul navire n'était jamais entré. Le 17 janvier 1773, elles franchissent le cercle polaire antarctique, une première dans l'histoire de la navigation. Le soir même, la banquise ferme l'horizon d'est en ouest. Cook remonte, perd son second navire dans la tempête, et gagne seul la Nouvelle-Zélande après cent dix-sept jours de mer sans voir la terre, sans un homme perdu par le scorbut.
Vient alors le contraire du froid : Dusky Bay et ses cascades, le détroit de la Reine-Charlotte et sa tête coupée, puis Otaheite, le récif frôlé, le roi Otoo, les fêtes de Huaheine et d'Ulietea, deux jeunes insulaires qui montent à bord pour un monde qu'ils n'imaginent pas. Et, tout au bout de ce premier tome, une nouvelle qui glace le capitaine plus sûrement que la banquise : un navire est passé ici avant lui, et personne ne sait sous quel pavillon.
Ce second voyage de Cook est commandité par l'Amirauté et la Royal Society pour trancher, une bonne fois, la question du grand continent austral que les géographes situent depuis l'Antiquité au bas des cartes. À son bord, l'astronome William Wales veille sur le chronomètre de Kendall tandis que les naturalistes Johann Reinhold Forster et son fils Georg décrivent plantes, rivages et peuples inconnus. En franchissant le cercle polaire antarctique, Cook descend plus au sud qu'aucun navire avant lui, et ruine du même geste deux mille ans de spéculation savante sur une Terra Australis peuplée et fertile.
L'autre victoire de ce tome est silencieuse : sur un équipage complet, pas un homme ne meurt du scorbut, mal qui décimait jusque-là les grandes traversées. Choucroute, bouillon de malt et discipline du régime à bord font ici leurs preuves, un tournant pour la marine britannique. Premier tome de la trilogie consacrée au deuxième voyage de Cook (1772-1775), au sein de la collection Carnets de Voyages Oubliés, série Océanie et Pacifique, ce volume suit le trajet aller, de Plymouth aux îles de la Société ; les tomes suivants prolongeront la traversée du Pacifique austral jusqu'au retour en Angleterre.
Première réécriture intégrale moderne pour le lecteur d'aujourd'hui, qui rend lisible ce récit sans rien trahir du voyage. 20 illustrations originales et 10 cartes redessinées donnent à voir l'itinéraire, tandis qu'un appareil de repères (glossaire, chronologie, index, pour aller plus loin, note de l'éditeur, postface) et des morceaux choisis du texte original accompagnent la lecture.

Officier de la marine royale britannique, James Cook (1728-1779) commande la Resolution lors de son deuxième grand voyage autour du monde, de 1772 à 1775. Fils d'un journalier du Yorkshire devenu le meilleur navigateur de son temps grâce à son travail de cartographe pendant la guerre de Sept Ans, il reçoit de l'Amirauté et de la Royal Society la mission de trancher, une fois pour toutes, la question du continent austral. Le 17 janvier 1773, il devient le premier navigateur à franchir le cercle polaire antarctique, ruinant deux mille ans de spéculations savantes sur une Terre du Sud peuplée et fertile. Son récit personnel, rédigé au jour le jour, précède un troisième voyage qui fera de lui le plus grand explorateur de son siècle.

Returns Policy
We ask all customers to contact us for authorisation should they wish to return their order. Orders returned without authorisation may not be credited.
If you wish to return, please contact us within 14 days of receiving your order to obtain authorisation.
Returns requested beyond this time will not be authorised.

Right of withdrawal

Statutory right to withdraw
You have the right to withdraw from this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.
The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the last good or the last lot or piece.
To exercise the right of withdrawal, electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". We will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a withdrawal on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.
To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.
Effects of withdrawal
If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).
We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.
We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.
We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.
We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back, or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.
You shall send back the goods or hand them over to PBShop.store UK, Fairford, United Kingdom, +44 1285 712917, without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your withdrawal from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.
Exceptions to the right of withdrawal
The right of withdrawal does not apply to:
- The delivery of newspapers, journals or magazines with the exception of subscription contracts; and
- The supply of digital content which is not supplied on a tangible medium (e.g. on a CD or DVD) if you accepted when you placed your order that we could start to deliver it, and that you could not withdraw once delivery had started.
