Septembre 1773. La Resolution quitte les lagons tièdes de la Société et met le cap au sud, seule, à la recherche d'un continent que toute l'Europe croit tapi au bout du monde.
Aux îles des Amis, des chefs impassibles reçoivent Cook dans le faste ; en Nouvelle-Zélande, une tête tranchée sur le pont lui révèle le cannibalisme qu'il refusait de croire. Puis le navire s'enfonce dans les glaces : les îles de glace se referment, la banquise barre l'horizon, et le 30 janvier 1774 le navigateur atteint le point le plus austral jamais gagné par un homme, 71 degrés 10 minutes sud. Au-delà, il n'y a rien : le grand continent austral n'existe pas.
Remonté vers le soleil, Cook aborde les géants de pierre de l'île de Pâques, retrouve les Marquises découvertes deux siècles plus tôt par Mendaña, assiste à la revue d'une flotte de guerre tahitienne de plus de trois cents pirogues menée par l'amiral Towha, fait ses adieux au roi Otoo et aux îles de la Société, puis pousse jusqu'aux Nouvelles-Hébrides, au seuil d'une terre encore inconnue des Européens.
Ce deuxième tome couvre le coeur du voyage : les livres II et III du récit original de Cook, de septembre 1773 à juillet 1774. C'est là que se joue la double conquête du voyage, le record polaire qui ruine deux mille ans de spéculation sur un continent austral peuplé, et la rencontre la plus dense avec les peuples du Pacifique, des îles des Amis aux Nouvelles-Hébrides en passant par l'île de Pâques et les Marquises. Face au cannibalisme maori, Cook passe de l'incrédulité horrifiée à l'expérience directe, faisant griller un morceau de chair sur son gaillard d'arrière pour en avoir le coeur net, un geste qui dit autant de son siècle que de ce qu'il observe.
Deuxième tome de la trilogie consacrée au deuxième voyage de Cook (1772-1775), au sein de la collection Carnets de Voyages Oubliés, série Océanie et Pacifique, ce volume prolonge le trajet du tome précédent, de la Société jusqu'aux Nouvelles-Hébrides ; le tome suivant refermera la traversée du Pacifique austral jusqu'au retour en Angleterre.
Première réécriture intégrale moderne pour le lecteur d'aujourd'hui, qui rend lisible ce récit sans rien trahir du voyage. 20 illustrations originales et 10 cartes redessinées donnent à voir l'itinéraire, tandis qu'un appareil de repères (glossaire, chronologie, index, pour aller plus loin, note de l'éditeur, postface) et des morceaux choisis du texte original accompagnent la lecture.

Returns Policy
We ask all customers to contact us for authorisation should they wish to return their order. Orders returned without authorisation may not be credited.
If you wish to return, please contact us within 14 days of receiving your order to obtain authorisation.

Statutory right to withdraw

You have the right to withdraw from this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.

The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the last good or the last lot or piece.

To exercise the right of withdrawal, electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". We will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a withdrawal on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.

To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.

Effects of withdrawal

If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).

We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.

We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.

We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.

We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back, or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.
