A first-hand travel memoir that documents the author's seven trips to Cuba between 1991 and 2000. It provides a street-level look at the country during the Special Period?the era of extreme economic hardship following the collapse of the Soviet Union. Ripley moves beyond political abstractions to present an intimate portrait of Cuban society through direct conversations with ordinary citizens. The book explores how individuals navigate a contradictory island where fierce national pride and loyalty to revolutionary ideals coexist with deep frustration over scarcity, black markets, and shifting government policies.
