Print on Demand. This book is an in-depth examination of a general class of queueing networks with first-in-first-out service discipline. It presents a novel approach to studying the Brownian approximation of such networks, challenging previous assumptions and conjectures. The author provides a rigorous mathematical framework, including a pseudo heavy traffic limit theorem, to demonstrate the limitations of existing Brownian models. The analysis reveals that certain networks do not converge to continuous limits, offering a new perspective on the applicability of these models. The book's insights contribute to the ongoing debate on Brownian approximations in queueing theory, highlighting the need for more general and flexible approaches. Its findings pave the way for future research directions, encouraging the exploration of alternative approximation methods and the investigation of service disciplines beyond first-in-first-out. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

Rethinking how we model busy networks under heavy load and what that means for real‑world performance.
This book examines multiclass open queueing networks and shows that a long‑held Brownian approximation does not always apply. It offers a careful look at when standard limits fail and why more general models may be needed.
In clear terms, the work frames the problem of predicting system behavior as demand grows without bound. It introduces a pseudo heavy traffic limit and demonstrates that not all networks converge to a continuous limit. Readers will see how specific network structures can defy expected Brownian models, and why this matters for analysis and design.- Introduces the heavy traffic framework and key terms like workload and idleness in multiclass networks.
- Shows that certain two‑ and three‑station networks do not converge to the standard Brownian model.
- Explains the idea of a pseudo heavy traffic limit and its implications for modeling accuracy.
- Discusses how these results affect the use of existing approximation methods and routing considerations.
