Item description from seller

Pp. 1005, frontispiece portrait engraved by H. Robinson after Colvin Smith and extra engraved title-page, text in two columns. Original brown cloth, blindstamped ito both upper and lower covers in a Cambridge design, brown coated endpapers. Loosely inserted is the same portrait engraved by Robert C. Bell, from the Edinburgh, Adam & Charles Black edition of March 1852, and another portrait engraved by Henry Meyer from a London publication of October 1st, 1819. Also included are two manuscript, autographed letters: 1) 4-page folded note, with stamped, addressed envelope with rubber stamps dated 1846 and red wax seal on verso. Addressed to: H.E.S. [Henry E.S.] Dalbiac Esqr, Windham Club, St. James's Square, London. Regarding Powers of attorney, stamped and unstamped documents, also "I am also ready, on the part of my constituents, not only to sanction, but to advise the purchase of an annuity for Mrs. Smith by the Executives, and to adhere the price to be deducted from the residue which might then be wholly [word?] finely distributed and discharged by the beneficiaries .". 2) 4-page folded note. Dated Saturday [word?] 23 June 1832. Addressed to "My Dear Lamb [William Lamb, Lord Melbourne, 2nd Viscount Melbourne, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom 1834, 1835-1841]. Regarding Dr. Christison being elected Professor of Materia Medica, and the chair of Medical Jurisprudence being now vacant. ". it appears [word?] the choice is between Dr. Traill and Dr. Maclagan - Both are clever, active and presentable men - and both liberal and for part of their lives, sufferers for [word?] liberality. . I am glad the choice is not with me - a rigorous estimate of merit will probably lead me to decide for Traill - while [word?] [Drs.?] and feelings want incline me to Maclagan - [Craigie?, Gunderstein?] is plodding studious man - capable of [bringing?] out an useful book [vertical tear to paper at the fore-edge with a small bit of loss] . Gregory is a [word?] young man - of some talent but no established reputation and a very energetic Tory - Robertson as [word?], he's another recommendation [many words I can't make out here. I gather he's an extreme Tory and has a connection with the Duke of Argyle] - I do not hesitate to say [word?] the choise is really between Traill and Maclagan. / Ever Faithfullly Yours / F.
