Print on Demand. This book delves into the morphological value and phylogeny of ovules and their integuments. The author examines their origins by comparing ovules from lower and higher plants, describing their evolution from simple structures to more complex forms found in present-day plants. The book explores theories on whether ovules belong to the category of shoots, roots, or leaves, with a particular focus on the three main theories that have been proposed. Additionally, the author challenges the widely-held synangial theory, which suggests that the integument of an ovule is homologous with the sporange envelope of ferns. Through detailed descriptions and a comparative analysis of various ovules, this book provides valuable insights into the diversity and evolution of ovule structures in the plant kingdom, offering a comprehensive understanding of their morphological significance. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

The question about the morphological value of the ovule, has long been the subject of investigation and discussion, but a decisive answer is stil waited for. The first step to be done in order to throw light on this problem, is to determine to which category of organs, shoot, root or leaf, it can be classified as a whole. Especially during the nineteenth century there has been a good deal of disputing about this subject and nearly all morphologists have occupied themselves more or less with this question.
Finely their conceptions and Opinions settled on three theories, which are to be mentioned later on, but nobody could give such convincing arguments, that one theory was accepted every where.
Gradually, however, the botanists have adopted the principal idea of one of those theories, and now - a-days it is generally granted, that the ovule is borne by a leaf, at least belongs to it, but a correct interpretation of the nature and the origin of both integuments and the nucellus is very little certain.
The investigations concerning the ovule started from the conditions of the Angiosperms and in order to state the nature of nucellus and integuments, five different methods were used, viz. The ontogeny, the anatomy, the topographical-morphology, the phylogeny and the teratology.
