Understand how a nation measures its money—and why taxes shape every part of daily life. This work presents a clear look at how income, production, and tax policy interact in Britain and its colonies, and why financial decisions affect labor, trade, and government debt.
Written as a practical examination of public finance, it explains why taxes fall on land, commerce, or consumption, and how the value of labor contributes to or bears that burden. It also discusses currency, debt, and the challenge of estimating a country’s real revenue when economies and populations change over time.
- Learn how revenue is defined and how different taxes influence workers, producers, and consumers.
- See a method for estimating national income by combining land, mineral, and trade output with the cost of labor.
- Explore how currency choices and debt shape long‑term financial stability.
- Compare the revenue bases of Britain and its colonies and what that means for governance and policy.
Ideal for readers curious about historical debates on taxation, public finance, and economic policy in the 18th–19th centuries.

Product Description
The subject of this inquiry is of a complicated nature, and it is possible I may altogether fail in the object I have in view; but, even if this were to be the case, I may yet have the good fortune to sug~ gest some views and considerations that may be of use to an en lightened politician who has the inclination and the power to take the necessary measures for the good of the country.
The principal object I have in view at present is, to point out a mode either of ascertaining or approximating to the true and actual revenue of the country, so as to draw a comparison between the amount of the taxable revenue on the one hand, and the amount of taxes actually levied out of it on the other; that your Lordship, and others interested, may be able to judge, from the simplest view of the affairs of the country that can be given, whether the country is likely to prosper by persevering in the present system, and whether it may not be absolutely necessary to change that system, at least in the mean time.
