Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Vallentine, Mitchell & Co., Ltd.; likely first English issue of this collection of the stories of sixty-four Germans who fought against the Nazi regime, all of whom died doing so, with semi-gloss black-and-white photographs of each; xxvi, 270pp. Author Annedore Leber was the wife of Julius Leber, one of the resistors profiled in this book. Binding is tight and sturdy, but cocked; bottom rear corner of lightly soiled black cloth boards shows some abrasion, otherwise, corners only gently bumped/rubbed; gilt titling remains bright and bold. Large peeling tear to front panel of price-clipped dust jacket, which previous owner tried to repair with tape to verso; a few smaller tears to edges; moderate rubbing, primarily to age-toned spine and rear panel. Previous owner notation to front free endpaper, else free of markings. Ships same or next day from Dinkytown, Minneapolis, Minnesota. Seller Inventory # 325176

1st edition stiff wrappers As New octavo xl + 270pp., b/w plates, bibliog., Leber's thumbnail portraits bring to life and record the heroism of sixty-four members of the Resistance from every walk of life. Their stories are sometimes spectacular, often quiet and almost commonplace accounts of men and women striving to maintain dignity and decency in the face of the ruthless, total power of the Nazis. The acceptance of Western Germany as a member of the West European and Atlantic system of nations has been a decision of very great difficulty, and has caused political tensions in several countries, including our own. As long as Germany was entirely subjugated, the country might be the field of a diplomatic struggle between East and West, but the German people themselves seemed hardly to be part of the problem. However, when Western Germany became a possible partner in an alliance, the character and traditions of the people could no longer be ignored. It is not surprising, therefore, that several books, widely publicised and widely read, should have appeared, reminding Englishmen of the atrocities of the Nazi régime. This book is in no sense an answer to them. But it is an essential part of the evidence, and one largely neglected in this country, which must be considered if the problem of the German people, now, once more, one of vital urgency, is studied. This book will not appear, at first, in any way to lull the fears of those who are alarmed at the prospect of the rearming of Germany. Rather, the true picture of the horrors of the time is incomplete without it. But when English men ask themselves the questions, which they certainly ought to ask: "Can we trust a nation responsible for such deeds? Can we be morally justified in so close an association with it? Does such an association amount to a condonation of the Nazi period in its history?' They will find this book indispensable, if they are to find the true answer. Seller Inventory # 1132101
