People cast it aside like an old rag because it only prevented them from deceiving others, profiting at their expense, and getting ahead in life.
The discarded Conscience begins to pass from hand to hand, but each new owner suffers nothing but unbearable torment because of it.
A drunkard who takes possession of it loses the ability to drink and enjoy his accustomed life; the unscrupulous merchant Prokhorych begins giving his goods away for free and nearly goes bankrupt; and a bribe-taking official loses sleep and the ability to accept gifts.
All of them dream of getting rid of the unbearable burden and pass it on to one another like a dangerous and harmful object.
In the end, Conscience asks its last owner to give it to a little child.
Only in a pure child’s soul does it hope to grow, gain strength, and, when the child becomes an adult, restore genuine modesty, honesty, and humanity to people.
In his characteristic ironic manner, Saltykov-Shchedrin exposes the moral degradation of a society in which ethical principles have become an obstacle to everyday survival and success.
