A totally unfit fifty-something retires early from his teaching job in order to fulfil his almost foolhardy lifetime's ambition to walk across Iceland, solo. This book tells of the rigorous planning and meticulous preparations, the humorous trials and unnerving tribulations in embarking on such a trip, following distant roads and tracks, crossing lava deserts and swollen rivers from north-east Iceland to Iceland's capital, Reykjavik. It's a journey of discovery and endurance; of perseverance and despair. The experience is made all the harder by some abysmal weather. The daily challenges provoke much self-examination and re-evaluation, leading to the conclusion that life thereafter will never be the same again.

About the Author: An enthusiastic and dedicated primary school teacher in north-east Lancashire, England for over thirty years with a passion for enthusing, educating and entertaining children. He has a son who taught him everything he knows about birds and planes. Mark likes to sing frenetic basso profundo, though he never fully knows the words of any of his songs, accompanying himself especially badly on acoustic guitar. He has a love of the outdoors, walking in the Pendle Hill area, The Forest of Bowland, the Ribble Valley and the Yorkshire Dales. He has cycled John O' Groats to Land's End, run the Windermere Marathon and enjoys travelling around Europe. He is obsessed with Iceland and reading about polar exploration -Ernest Shackleton is his all-time hero. He also likes plane spotting and reading funny books, with Bill Bryson and Michael Green being two of his favourite authors. He played league cricket in his youth and hopes one day to play rugby union at scrum half for England. He now lives in Wirral and is trying to find a decent hill to climb.
