Paperback. The Confessor is a collection of intimate, unsettling poems about the truths people hide from others and the lies they tell themselves. These poems move through love, betrayal, emotional abuse, loneliness, ageing, desire, shame, grief, survival, and the quiet violence of being forgotten. Some voices confess what was done to them. Others admit what they did. Several speak from the uncomfortable space between victim and offender, where memory changes shape and innocence is never simple. At times tender, at times brutal, the collection explores damaged relationships, abandoned homes, public humiliation, private cruelty, lost faith, and the desperate human need to be seen. Each poem reads like a testimony whispered after midnight, when excuses have failed and only the truth remains.ExtractsShe called it our homewhile I paid for every room. Then folded my life into black bagsand left them beside the bins.We did not stop loving each other. We simply learnedhow to make love hurt.I confessed to the mirrorbecause it was the only witnessthat had never interrupted me.I was only wounded first. The cruelest thing she gave mewas a homeshe already knewshe would take away.Everyone has something they have never admitted. Extracts
She called it our home
while I paid for every room.
Then folded my life into black bags
and left them beside the bins.
We did not stop loving each other.
We simply learned
how to make love hurt.
I confessed to the mirror
because it was the only witness
that had never interrupted me.
I was only wounded first.
The cruelest thing she gave me
was a home
she already knew
she would take away.
Everyone has something they have never admitted.
