OFFICIAL ENDORSEMENT
By my Local Ordinary,
His Eminence, JAIME CARDINAL L. SIN
Archbishop of Manila
“The theme for the coming Synod of Bishops in 1983 is Reconciliation and Penance in the Mission of the Church. Our Holy Mother, the Church, would like to focus our attention on the Sacrament of Reconciliation and the spirit of Penance in the Church and to get feedback from the grassroots on the sensus fidelium of these two important doctrines.
“In the Philippines, for example, we notice a general neglect of the practice of Confession but an increase in the reception of Holy Communion. This ned not always be a sign of general malaise. It can be diagnosed as a sign of growth and health with a weak spot that needs healing.
Again, the Philippines, like any of the developing nations, is affected by the materialistic bent of society that makes it difficult to practice penance that liberates man from his “excessive attachment to things.” (The Holy Father’s Lenten Message of 1982). In his good will, the Filipino can do some “penitencia,” albeit seasonal only like the Alay Kapwa of Lent or the flagellants of Holy Week.
Again we see here a healthy attitude mixed up with folk religion in a a world where penance sis considered too sad, if not too otherworldly. The Holy Father, like an expert physician, seems to put his fingers on the soft spots to be diagnosed before they are given cure.
The Pope has sounded the call. Father LUIS ESTEBAN LATORRE, in his work, CONFESSION GUIDEBOOK (The How and Why of the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation), has responded to the call. The strength of this little book (now translated into Tagalog and Cebuano) is that it is a first, even if only a faint, effort to start generating interest in what the Holy Father wants us to think and talk about, in
preparation for the Synod of 1983.
