Print on Demand. This book questions dependence on charity and attempts to design a social infrastructure to serve those in need effectively. Written in 1526, it can be seen as an early articulation of the welfare state, outlining a practical system of welfare provision. Its insights remain relevant today as society grapples with poverty and the most effective means to alleviate suffering. Additionally, it underscores the importance of education and meaningful work in empowering individuals out of poverty. The author places great faith in the power of cooperation, arguing that a society that works to ensure the well-being of all its citizens is ultimately a stronger and more virtuous society. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Finally, by citations from the Scriptures and the Christian fathers, and to some extent also from the classic philosophers, though to them he attaches less authority, he expounds the duty of man to care for his less fortunate fellows, and the spirit in which charity should be given.
