Two volumes, Matt.-John & Acts-Revelation. Full leather, very worn, joints are cracked with nothing detached. Vol. II. lacks the spine title labels. 11 x 7 1/2 inches, marbled end papers & page edges; embellished with engravings and text illustrations. 838 & 734 pages, printed in triple columns, foxing in the text. A valuable compilation of the best thoughts from the best conservative Bible commentaries of the time. Fair condition only; priced accordingly.William Jenks, D.D., (1778-1866), was "a Congregational minister of great ability and distinction, was educated at Harvard where he graduated in 1797. He was first settled in the ministry over the congregational Church in Bath, Me., where he remained twelve years. He next filled the professorship of Oriental and English literature in Bowdoin College for three years. Then he went to Boston, and was very active in originating plans to secure religious and social privileges for seamen, till that time a neglected class of men. Some of the more prominent institutions for the benefit of sailors that have existed in that city owe their origin to him. He was pastor at the same time of the Green Street church, which he served for twenty-five years. Dr. Jenks was one of the chief founders of the American Oriental Society, and a prominent member of the Massachusetts Historical society.
