Print on Demand. This book examines the compositional principles of unity, coherence, and emphasis and their importance in developing clear, interesting, and effective writing. The author begins by discussing the basics of choosing a subject and limiting the theme before delving into an exploration of each principle's rhetorical impact. This book skillfully introduces concepts that help young writers improve their compositions and become more aware of their own writing choices. The author offers examples of incoherent and unfocused writing that does not use emphasis effectively, clearly illustrating how these principles work in practice. In doing so, the book provides a framework for understanding how to write with greater clarity and precision, making it a valuable resource for students and anyone looking to enhance their writing skills. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

The purpose of this book is to help the young student to write more clearly and more forcefully. Our aim is not to train writers in the finer graces Of language. That accomplishment depends upon the individual student and lies beyond our power. We shall be content if those who come to our book may receive a fresh desire to use with greater precision the simple English speech which is our priceless heritage.
We have tried to keep this book free from the technical word and phrase, because we are persuaded that good Writing depends upon the simple essentials. Therefore, the main stress has been placed upon the word, sentence, and paragraph. Remembering, then, that the plastic mind of the young student is before us, with experiences and likings peculiar to him, we have tried to furnish that mind with clear and simple directions, with examples chosen from good writers, and exercises which will test the student's understanding of the principles of writing.
