Print on Demand. This book is a collaborative effort of two naval officers and writing experts to provide midshipmen with the foundational elements of writing and speaking. Unlike most textbooks, this book focuses not just on composition rules but also on the specific forms of expression that naval officers will encounter throughout their careers. The first half of the book goes into the fundamentals of writing: the paragraph, sentence structure, and word choice. The second half delves into the practical application of writing in the form of the official letter, professional report, and speech. The fundamentals of composition are broken down into manageable units that emphasize clarity, unity, and structure. The authors provide midshipmen with loads of examples, exercises, and expert advice that will help them advance their writing and speaking skills. The insights and concepts in this book are essential to any naval officer's development and will guide them as they navigate their writing responsibilities throughout their careers. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

- Biography and Autobiography
The work in compo itiou, as planned in this book, differs from the usua treatments of the subjects in that it is designed to meet the special needs of the naval ofiicer. Much that is usually studied in text books ou composition is therefore omitted in order that certain essentials may be emphasized. The venerable band of brothers, Narration, Description, Exposition, and Argumentation, are here given a leave of absence in order that the midshipman may put his time and energy into the fundamentals of English and the spe cific forms of expression that he is bound to employ throughout his career. It is also the idea of the authors to condense the text in order that less time may be spent in reading advice about writing and more time put on actual writing. This book does not pretend to be a complete treatment of composition. It pre supposes the presence of a trained instructor in the section room, who can be depended on to supplement the text whenever necessary.
