Chemical reactions occur everywhere. While we occasionally link chemical reactions with the sterile environment of the test tube and laboratory, this is not the case. Indeed, the massive number of transformations results in a dazzling, almost unfathomable variety of new substances and energy changes occurring every second of every day in our environment. A reaction can be classed as redox if it involves both oxidation and reduction, or as nonredox if neither oxidation or reduction occurs. The majority of straightforward redox reactions may be characterised as combination, decomposition, or single displacement. The broad notion of a chemical reaction has been expanded to include reactions involving things smaller than atoms, such as nuclear reactions, radioactive decays, and elementary particle interactions, as described by quantum field theory. Chemical reactions are often defined by a chemical change and result in the formation of one or more products with features distinct from the reactants. Often, reactions are composed of a series of discrete stages, referred to as elementary reactions, and the information describing the specific sequence of events is included in the reaction mechanism.
