Master the Engineering Principles, Technologies, and Design Decisions Behind Safe, Efficient, and Reliable Oil and Gas Well Completions.
A successfully drilled well is only the beginning. Transforming that well into a productive, controllable, and reliable oil or gas asset requires a thorough understanding of completion engineering, downhole equipment, reservoir performance, pressure management, and well integrity.
Well Completion Design and Control by Dr. Benjamin Flux, Ph.D. provides a comprehensive, practical, and technically rigorous exploration of modern well completion engineering. Combining fundamental engineering principles with detailed calculations, worked examples, technical illustrations, and practical design methods, this textbook equips readers with the knowledge needed to understand, evaluate, and design effective completion systems for oil and gas wells.
From selecting production tubing and packers to designing perforation systems, controlling formation sand, evaluating artificial lift, and managing downhole flow, this book explains how critical completion components work together to optimize well performance while maintaining mechanical integrity and operational safety.
What You Will Learn-
Fundamentals of Well Completion Engineering: Understand completion objectives, reservoir-to-wellbore connectivity, completion classifications, and systematic design workflows.
-
Production Tubing and String Mechanics: Explore tubing selection, material grades, combined loading, triaxial stress, temperature effects, tubing movement, and tubing-to-packer force calculations.
-
Packers and Downhole Completion Equipment: Examine permanent and retrievable packers, sealing systems, differential pressure, mechanical isolation, and multizone completion configurations.
-
Perforating and Reservoir Inflow: Learn perforation design, shot density, phasing, penetration, perforation skin, underbalance, productivity index, and inflow performance relationships.
-
Formation Damage and Sand Control: Understand completion-fluid selection, formation protection, sand-screen technology, gravel packing, and strategies for maintaining well productivity.
-
Advanced Completion Architectures: Investigate openhole, cased-hole, horizontal, multilateral, and selective multizone completions, including stimulation and hydraulic fracturing interfaces.
-
Artificial Lift and Production Optimization: Study electrical submersible pumps, gas-lift systems, rod pumping, and the relationship between reservoir inflow and tubing outflow performance.
-
Well Integrity and Downhole Safety: Understand primary and secondary well barriers, subsurface safety valves, annulus pressure management, pressure testing, and long-term integrity considerations.
-
Intelligent Completions and Flow Control: Explore inflow control devices, sliding sleeves, interval control valves, zonal flow allocation, and advanced downhole monitoring and control technologies.
-
Completion Installation and Well Intervention: Gain insight into completion installation, well testing, slickline operations, coiled tubing, workovers, and permanent well abandonment.
