TRANSITIONAL BINDING 1929 MODERN LIBRARY EDITION IN DUST JACKET The Complete Poetical Works of Francis Thompson. New York: The Modern Library, 1929 Reprint. RARE TRANSITIONAL BINDING. Bound in blue balloon cloth spine type 5 with Kent endpapers. Very short-lived binding style, in use 1929 - Spring 1930. This gold-heavy design was planned before the 1929 crash, and was quickly deemed too expensive for Depression-era book publishing. The gold torchbearer was replaced with a blind stamped torchbearer, and in 1930, the gold tree was dropped. This copy has the blind stamped torchbearer. The book is in very good- condition with fading and wear to spine though gilt is still bright and nice. Binding is solid with no writing in text. The dust jacket is very good with chipping on top spine and extremities and age toning to spine. On the back of the dust jacket 236 titles are listed indicating a 1935 dustjacket.
