Add to basketFeast your eyes upon The Complete Penguin Classics Catalogue (c.2010) by Penguin , published by Penguin ? which is either the most self-assured title ever printed or the literary equivalent of standing in front of a mirror and saying, ?Yes. All of it.? This is not a novel. It is not a memoir. It is not a slim volume of poems to slip into your pocket. It is, gloriously, a catalogue ? a roll call of civilisation. A parade of authors who have survived centuries, empires, revolutions, literary movements, footnotes, and university reading lists. It is the paper version of a raised eyebrow that says, ?You haven?t read all this yet?? Inside you will find page after page of temptation: Homer rubbing shoulders with Dostoevsky, Austen calmly waiting, Kafka staring into the middle distance, and some obscure medieval mystic you are absolutely certain you meant to get round to in 2007. It is less a book than an inventory of guilt. But it is also deeply comforting. A catalogue like this reminds you that literature is not just one book at a time ? it is a vast, carefully curated conversation stretching back thousands of years. Penguin?s distinctive spines ? black, orange, the modern grey-and-black livery ? line up here in tidy rows like well-behaved intellectual soldiers, ready to march onto your shelves and quietly judge your Netflix habits. Published around 2010, this edition captures Penguin at full imperial confidence. The Classics range had expanded into a universe: Greeks, Romans, Russians, revolutionaries, philosophers, poets, scandalous Victorians, stoic Japanese diarists ? all democratically available in matching paperbacks that suggest cultural sophistication can, in fact, be colour-coded. And what is more deliciously ironic than owning the catalogue of books you might one day own? It?s aspirational in the purest sense. You don?t have to read all 800+ entries. You simply have to know they are there. Waiting. Patiently. This copy is in Good condition , as sold by Crappy Old Books , which feels entirely appropriate. A catalogue should look slightly handled ? thumbed, consulted, perhaps circled in pencil by someone planning their intellectual conquest of the canon. No ISBN listed here, because this isn?t about scanning and purchasing ? it?s about contemplating and coveting. Perfect for: Bibliophiles who like lists almost as much as books Penguin devotees who enjoy admiring the full sweep of the Classics empire Anyone who has ever said, ?I really should read more?? and meant it The Complete Penguin Classics Catalogue : the book that contains multitudes ? just not the actual books. Crappy Old Books: helping you plan your literary immortality, one catalogue at a time. THIS BOOK BEARS THE CRAPPY OLD BOOKS STAMP. IF THAT IS UNDESIRABLE PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS. THE STAMP MARKS WHICH IS USUALLY TO THE FRONT AND BACK INNER PAGES SAYS SOLD BY CRAPPY OLD BOOKS WITH WEB SITE URL. IT IN NO WAY DEMINISHED FROM THE READING. IF YOU WANT A PRISTINE BOOK, PLEASE FIND ANOTHER BOOK IN BETTER CONDITION SOMEWHERE ELSE.
