viii, 225, [1] pp., 8vo, modern polished tan half calf, green paper sides, gilt title. With engraved frontispiece of Samuel Ayscough. A compilation of every print published in the Gentleman's Magazine from 1731-1818, with the exception of the mathematical and astronomical diagrams and figures (it being "superfluous," according to the preface). The engraver's name is included when provided in the print. Following the main chronological list, a list of artists' names and an alphabetical index to the subjects of the plates and woodcuts are added. With the half-title, which states that this work is "Volume the Fifth," four earlier general indices of the magazine having already been compiled, largely by Ayscough (the "Prince of Index-makers"). A very useful and valuable work; scarce. An attractive copy, with the pages clean, other than for some mild offsetting from frontis to the titlepage. Seller Inventory # 1364
