Protect your family. Preserve your wealth. Avoid unnecessary probate. Build a legacy that lasts.
Estate planning is not just for the wealthy. It is for anyone who owns a home, has savings or investments, has children or grandchildren, cares for a loved one, or simply wants a say in what happens to their property and family when they can no longer manage those decisions themselves.
The Complete Guide to Trusts, Estate Planning, and Guardianship: Protect Your Family, Preserve Your Wealth, Avoid Probate, and Leave a Lasting Legacy is a practical guide designed to help individuals and families understand the essential tools used to protect assets, prepare for incapacity, transfer wealth, and create a lasting legacy.
Too many families discover the importance of estate planning only after a crisis occurs. A death, serious illness, incapacity, or family dispute can leave loved ones facing court proceedings, unexpected expenses, delays, confusion, and difficult decisions.
This book helps you prepare before the crisis.
Written in straightforward, understandable language, this guide explains important estate-planning concepts without burying readers in unnecessary legal terminology.
INSIDE THIS BOOK, YOU'LL DISCOVER:- Wills and Trusts — Understand how these important estate-planning tools work, how they differ, and the roles they can play in transferring property.
- Revocable Living Trusts — Learn how living trusts can help manage assets during your lifetime and potentially simplify the transfer of property after death.
- Irrevocable Trusts — Explore their potential uses, advantages, limitations, and why professional guidance is particularly important.
- Probate — Understand what probate is, why families may want to minimize it, and which assets may transfer outside the probate process.
- Guardianship — Learn what can happen when someone becomes unable to manage personal or financial affairs and why advance planning matters.
- Powers of Attorney — Discover how properly prepared documents can authorize trusted individuals to make financial or other decisions when necessary.
- Health-Care Planning — Understand the importance of documenting your wishes and selecting people you trust to act on your behalf.
- Beneficiary Designations — Learn why retirement accounts, life insurance, annuities, and other beneficiary-designated assets require careful coordination with the rest of your estate plan.
- Transfer-on-Death Accounts — Discover how TOD designations can allow certain assets to transfer directly to beneficiaries, generally outside probate.
- Pay-on-Death Accounts — Learn how POD designations can simplify the transfer of qualifying bank and credit-union accounts.
- Real Estate and Estate Planning — Understand important considerations surrounding homes, investment properties, jointly owned property, and transferring real estate.
- Protecting Minor Children and Other Dependents — Learn why naming appropriate guardians and planning how assets will be managed can be critical.
- Preserving Family Wealth — Explore strategies for organizing assets and preparing for an orderly transfer from one generation to the next.
- Legacy Planning — Go beyond distributing money and property by considering the values, instructions, and intentions you want to leave behind.
A strong estate plan answers some of life's most important questions:
Who will make decisions for you if you cannot make them yourself?
Who should receive your property?
Who will care for your minor children or other dependents?
How can you make things easier for the people you love?
