The first edition of this popular book was published in 1947. This is the sixth impression, 1949. This book was previously owned by Theodore Bikel. He signed his name on the first front end paper, his bookplate is on the front inside cover. Here's a little bit about his life. 'Theodore Bikel studied acting at Britain's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and made his London stage debut in1948. He was also a widely recognized and recorded folk singer and guitarist. In 1959, he co-founded the Newport Folk Festival and created the role of Captain von Trapp opposite Mary Martin in the original Broadway production of The Sound of Music. In 1969, Bikel began acting and singing on stage as Tevye in the musical Fiddler on the Roof, a role he performed more often than any other actor to date. He appeared in films including The African Queen, Moulin Rouge, I Want to Live!, My Fair Lady, and The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming. For his portrayal of Sheriff Max Muller in The Defiant Ones, he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Bikel was president of the Associated Actors and Artists of America until 2014, and was president of Actors' Equity in the late 1970s and early 1980s. For most of his acting career, he became known for his versatility in playing characters of different nationalities, claiming he took on those different personalities so his acting would "never get stale." On television, he played an Armenian merchant on Ironside, a Polish professor on Charlie's Angels, an American professor on The Paper Chase, a Bulgarian villain on Falcon Crest, a Russian on Star Trek: The Next Generation, and an Italian on Murder, She Wrote.' As you can see from the photos, the yellow covers are quite clean. They have a little darkening off the top edges. The corners and edges are in solid shape. The spine is slightly slanted forward. The book is solidly bound. There are no cracks or spaces to be found anywhere. The inside covers and end papers are very toned/darkened, as you can see in the photo of Mr. Bikel's signature and bookplate. However the dark toning goes away beginning with the title page and ending with the last page of the book. There is a small tear off the middle edge of the signed front end paper. There are no other tears in the book. The pages are clean, just a few small light spots. There is a spot or two on the middle page edge. There are just a few instances where it peeks over the edge of the actual page. I'm not seeing any conspicuous creasing. There are no dogeared corners. There are no markings. And Mr. Bikel's signature is the only writing in the book, his bookplate is the only attachment. The illustrations are quite nice. They are the work of the author. You can see the dust jacket in the photos. I've rated it only Good Minus mostly because of the small loss off the top edge of the spine which takes out half of one letter. The jacket's other shortcomings are a tear off the top edge of the front and rear, tiny losses at two of the corners, handling soiling on the front and rear, fading of the spine, and a speck-sized hole on the spine. The flaps have some handling soiling as well. The top edges of the flaps have some crinkling. There is a crease at the bottom corner of the rear flap. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. It will be fitted with a protective cover. Seller Inventory # 002535
