Print on Demand. This book, a precursor to its successor, Practical Arithmetic, is the renowned mathematician James Thomson's comprehensive guide to arithmetic for schools and academies. Thomson sets out to develop both the intellect of his pupils and their ability to apply arithmetic concepts to practical situations. He presents the topics of arithmetic, including Notation, Numbers, Their Properties, Factors, and Divisors, and explores their applications in measuring surfaces, solids, and calculating profits and commissions. While the book's roots are planted firmly in the teaching practices from 1882, it maintains relevance due to its focus on developing pupils' critical thinking skills. Thomson's approach helps students understand the 'why' behind arithmetic processes rather than simply relying on rote memorization. This book is an indispensable tool for building a solid foundation in arithmetic, providing a deep understanding of the subject that extends far beyond its pages. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…
