🛡️ The Complete Data Hoarder’s Guide to OpenZFS & TrueNAS 📦💾
Build fast, reliable, privacy-first home storage without guesswork—designed for beginners and power users alike.
🚫 Tired of scattered tutorials, RAID myths, and risky YouTube “tweaks” that put your memories at stake?
✅ This step-by-step handbook shows you how to plan, install, and operate TrueNAS the right way—using OpenZFS pools, vdevs, and datasets that protect your data for years while staying simple to maintain.
➡️ That’s why I wrote “The Complete Data Hoarder’s Guide to OpenZFS & TrueNAS,” your practical companion to mastering ZFS snapshots, replication, and secure file sharing. This is more than a technical manual—it’s a reproducible roadmap to bulletproof, future-ready storage for homes, studios, and small offices.
🔧 What you’ll master
• CORE vs SCALE decisions and a clean install flow that avoids hidden traps
• RAID-Z1/Z2/Z3 trade-offs so you choose capacity and resilience with confidence
• Pool creation best practices, dataset layout that scales (e.g., tank/media, tank/backups), and least-privilege permissions
• SMB/NFS shares that “just work” across Windows, macOS, and Linux—with stable paths and consistent user mapping
• Snapshots, schedules, and time-travel restores that beat ransomware and user mistakes
• Local + cloud backups with ZFS send/receive, rclone, rsync, and Restic—plus Backblaze/Wasabi options
• Media servers that respect your storage: Plex/Jellyfin, hardware transcoding, and library hygiene
• Mobile-first photo backup (Immich) and private file sync (Nextcloud) that keep families and teams in sync
⚙️ Production-grade habits
CMR vs SMR drive guidance, scrubs and SMART tests, alerting that catches failures early, and privacy-first defaults. Learn naming patterns, snapshot retention, and replication strategies that scale from a single NAS to a second system—without babysitting.
🌐 Access without exposure
Remote access the safe way with VPN/Tailscale—no open admin panels. Clear, copy-ready steps to stream your media on the go while keeping the NAS locked down.
📊 See problems before they hurt
Drive health dashboards, capacity forecasting, and Grafana-ready metrics so you can act before a hiccup becomes data loss.
🎯 Who this helps
Beginners setting up their first NAS, homelab builders, photographers and creators, media collectors, families, and small offices that need dependable, self-hosted storage on a sensible budget.
💡 Why it’s a must-read
Clear steps, verified workflows, and recovery playbooks—so you prevent downtime, restore fast, and keep every photo, project, and archive safe. No fluff. No guesswork. Just proven practices that work.
📘 Inside, you’ll also find
• Library organization rules that keep Plex/Jellyfin blazing fast
• GPU-aware transcoding tips for quieter, smoother streams
• 3-2-1 backup patterns that survive disk failures, mistakes, and disasters
