Item description from seller

A soundly rebound, illustrated Victorian edition of Walton"s celebrated angling classic, enriched with memoirs by Sir Harris Nicolas, sixty engravings, and two unique photographic additions laid in by the previous owner. Rebound in full green cloth.'The Compleat Angler' is a well known seventeenth century work celebrating the art and spirit of fishing, in both prose and verse. This edition includes original memoirs and notes by Sir Harris Nicolas, and is illustrated with sixty engravings after designs by Thomas Stothard and Inskipp. Extra illustrated with two original photographs taken by the previous owner laid down to the verso of the frontispiece. Collated, complete. The work was admired by the likes of Charles Lamb, who admired it for it's innocence and simplicity of the heart. In fact it is so popular that it is the second most reprinted book in English after the King James Bible.Written by Izaak Walton, who is now best known for this work, though he professed to not be an expert with a fishing fly. He also wrote a collection of short biographies called 'Walton's Lives'.32 pages of publisher's advertisements to rear. Rebound in full green cloth. Externally, smart. Slight rubbing and bumping to extremities resulting in very slight loss to cloth. Library annotation to spine. Slight cracking to upper extremities of rear joint. Previous owner's contemporary ink inscription to front free endpaper. Bookplate of Stafford public Library to front paste down. Library stamp to verso of title page. Slight offsetting to endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean with light scattered spotting to fore edge and one or two minor handling marks. Discreet library stamping to the odd page and plate. Very Good.
