Beautiful binding and unfortunately both covers (present) are detached. The SIGNED binding was executed by "WORSFOLD", 3/4 crushed green morocco and marbled boards. Spine with 5 bands and 6 compartments. Compartments as follows: 1. Gold Stamped Fishing Creel, 2. Title stamped in gold, 3. Walton and Cotton, 4. Gold stamped fish and net, 5. Gold stamped Fly, 6. Gold Stamped Fishing Creel, with the date 1808 stamped in gold at the bottom. Note: There are also 4 gold-stamped fish in each compartment (one in each corner) except for the two compartments with the title and authors name. This book would be worth it to have the covers reattached as it really is a beautiful binding. Very good+ in full medium brown diced calf with a professional reback of the spine upon which has been placed a gilt on red leather spine label and gilt tooling. The front and rear boards have contemporary diced leather within a gilt double border. The end sheets are contemporary marbled paper. A small octavo measuring 7 5/8 by 4 5/8 inches lacking the 1/2 title page as is typical with this title. The tips of both boards have been bumped with the leather worn through to the underlying material. Part I of the book contains The Life of Mr. Isaac Walton in lxxvi (76) pages followed by Walton's The Complete Angler containing 262 pages, a page of explanation and three plates of illustrations as well as two music plates facing pages 204 and 262. Part II of the book contains Some Account of the Life and Writings of Charles Cotton, Esq. xxxii (32) pages; followed by Part II of The Complete Angler of 111 pages after which is an index. Izaak Walton (1593-1683) first published The Compleat Angler [original spelling] in 1653, and continued to add to it for over 25 years. It is a work in praise of fishing and nature, including prose, verse, and song. His friend, Charles Cotton (1630-1687) added to it with instructions in fly fishing and fly tying.
