xii, [9]-602 p. 22 cm. Frontispiece, one unnumbered plate within text, and 13 plates at rear. Full leather. Ink signature of Charles G. Greene (1826) on front pastedown and title page. Dampstains to first pages and front endpapers stuck together. Foxing throughout. The physician William Potts Dewees (1768 – 1841) was best known for his work in obstetrics, being described in American Medical Biographies as "so famous that no parturient woman of the time considered herself safe in other hands." This book introduced ideas from British and continental European physicians, especially Jean-Louis Baudelocque, and became the standard reference on obstetrics in the United States for a time.
