"Taylor constructs believable characters who are a satisfying match for the book's setting, particularly Primrose, who embodies a traditional Victorian heroine: courageous, willing to go against the grain, and profoundly aware of the constraints society has placed on her abilities." --BookLife Prize
An estranged daughter. A murdered father. A mysterious bookshop. And a jeweled compass that points to buried secrets.
Librarian and archivist Primrose Eversley returns to the English village of Haworth to settle her estranged father’s estate in this atmospheric historical cozy mystery filled with quirky townsfolk, hidden secrets, and unusual magic.
After years in America, Primrose never expected to see Haworth again. She certainly never expected to inherit the antique bookshop her father loved more than his family. But when she arrives, she learns the truth. Her father was murdered in the very shop he refused to leave behind. Now Primrose has inherited not just his bookshop, but the mystery of his death.
While sorting through dusty shelves and curious treasures, Primrose discovers a jeweled compass hidden among her father’s belongings. It points not north, but to buried secrets. With the help of her determined new assistant, Maggie Thistle—who has secrets of her own—Primrose begins to unravel a trail of clues linked to a shadowy brotherhood, a suspicious merchant, and journalist Rowan Ashcroft. Sharp, charming, and impossible to read, Rowan may be a suspect, an ally, or a dangerous temptation.
As secrets rise and danger closes in, Primrose must decide if she is brave enough to follow the truth wherever the compass leads.
Perfect for fans of charming English villages, haunted family secrets, magical artifacts, suspicious townsfolk, and twisty historical cozy mysteries. Read the Book that earned a 10 for Plot, 9 for Originality, and 9 for Character Execution by BookLife Prize Critics.
