In this volume Priestley attempts to compare Judeo-Christian institutions with those of Hinduism. Priestley believed that enough had been written on Hinduismâ Â"mostly by visiting Englishmenâ Â"to give a clear picture of the religion, one sufficiently detailed to allow him to compare and contrast it with his own. Unfortunately, the accounts of Hindi beliefs available to Priestley were generally exaggerated or simply fabricated, and in any case gave wildly different views of what Priestley wished to treat as a single religion. Consequently, A Comparison of the Institutions. . . reveals far more about Priestley's cultureâ Â"its prejudices, fixations, and general view of the otherâ Â"than actual Hindu practices of the time period.
