Item description from seller

Map. Color lithograph. Image measures 20" x 24" This fascinating and informative map is depicting various geological features throughout the globe. Includes eight maps showing "Plan of the Craters of Vesuvius and Etna", a "Physical Map of the Island of Tenerife", "Southern View of Etna from N.P.O. near Catania" and "View of the Summit of the Peak of Tenerife", "Chart of the South Keeling Islands", "Plan of the Volcanoes of Pichincha and Antisana", "Chart of Ascension Island" and "View of Ascension Island", "Plan of the Crater of Gedee in the island of Java", "Plan of Graham Island" and "Comparative View of the Elevation of the Principal Active Volcanoes on the Globe", and "Plan of Arthurs Seat." Each depiction is incredibly detailed, with specific sites and elevations labeled, some structures, topographical details, relief, depths by soundings, rock formations, vegetation, and more. Beautifully illustrated with mapmakers, dates, or artists listed with each respective map. From the seminal 'Physical Atlas of Natural Phenomena', featuring Johnston's classic symmetrical border design. Alexander Keith Johnston (1804-1871) was a Scottish geographer and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. Partnered with his brother William, Johnston maintained a prolific map publishing firm throughout the 19th century. Their output ranged from globes to atlases and wall maps. This map is a lovely example of Johnston's work.
